2024 CH-QUAT Excursion 21.-22. September, 2024

"Kandertal - Quaternary history and its significance for applied geology"

Coordinated by: René Löpfe

The excursion will focus on exciting Quaternary features at the interface between geology, paleoecology and applied investigations carried out earlier or currently taking place. The excursion stops will be guided by the involved researchers and project geologists will include the following topics:

  • Natural hazards and their monitoring - Monitoring and hazard management at Spitze Stei rockslide, Kandersteg
  • Holocene rock avalanches and its hydrogeology - The Kandersteg rock avalanche(s): Age(s) and impacts on the environment (then and now)
  • Lake Oeschinen - Rock-slope failures revealed in lake sediments in a seismically active alpine region
  • Remediation of the former ammunition storage «Mitholz» - Geotechnical and hydrogeological questions and investigations

Logistics
Start: September 21, 2024 | 9:30 Frutigen
Overnight stay in Kandersteg including dinner and breakfast.
Transportation in minibuses and gondola lift, several walks (max. 1 h on easy hiking trails (yellow signposts))
End: September 22, 2024 | ~16:30 probably in Frutigen or Spiez
To bring: Lunch for two days, Good foot wear, clothes adapted to the weather, GA or Halbtax (Swisspass) if available
Costs: CHF ~75.- in double room | CHF ~100.- in single room
